Professional Pilot Training (Stage 1 & Stage 2)

The following 2 stages are put together for the purposes of international students who need to apply for a student visa. They are designed to be studied one after the other, but can be studied separately, and are based on the New Zealand requirements needed for a pilot to enter the aviation industry as a commercial pilot. However, courses can be flexible and tailored to an individual’s requirements or achievements. Both stages 1 and 2 are full time courses and are NZQA accredited. These courses are available for both rotary and fixed wing students.

Professional Pilot Training Stage 1 (PPT1)

For aeroplane students, this course includes 100 hours single-engine flight time, 55 of which will be as pilot in command.  For helicopter students, this course includes 85 hours flight time, 50 of which will be as pilot in command.  You will be required to sit and pass 6 PPL theory exams. The topics comprise Meteorology, Navigation, Flight Radio Telephone Operator Certificate, Law, Aircraft Technology and Human Factors. This is as well as another 6 Commercial exams comprising of; Navigation, Meteorology, Law, Aircraft Technology, Principles of Flight and Human Factors.

  • Police records for all countries lived in for more than 6 months within the last 5 years
  • An equivalent of IELTS 5.5 or more, with no academic band lower than 5.0

Professional Pilot Training Stage 2 (PPT2)

This course includes further flying hours over and above stage 1 to gain a CPL.  During this stage, aeroplane students must choose one or more of the following options: a Multi-engine Instrument Rating and/or a C-Category Instructor Rating (A).  Helicopter students must choose one or more of the following options: a Basic Gas Turbine Rating and/or a C-Category Instructor Rating (H).

For aeroplane students, this course includes a further 135 hours flight training over and above stage 1 if you choose the MeIR option, or a further 176 hours if you choose the Instructor Rating.  Depending on your option, some of the flying time will be in a Multi-Engine aircraft.  You will also complete 3 Instrument Theory exams or an intense ground course for the Instruction Rating.

For helicopter students, this course includes a further 75 hours flight training over and above stage 1 for the BGT option, or 181 further flying hours for the Instructor Rating.  For the BGT option, 10 hours of this flying time will be in a Turbine aircraft; you will also complete the Basic Gas Turbine exam.  The Instructor Rating includes an intense ground course and a flight test.
